Greening SummerToast

Thank you to all the attendees for helping us work toward a zero waste event. Because of your support, we were able to divert 2400 pounds of waste from landfills. That’s 91% of all discards from the event. What does that mean to our planet?

SummerToast saved:

• 89 gallons of gasoline in energy savings
• 5007 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, the equivalent of taking .4 cars off the road for a year

You helped us avoid:

• 13.4 pounds of air pollution
• 4.6 pounds of water pollution
• 5.2 pounds of toxic herbicides that threaten plants, wild life, humans and our food systems
• 1263 pounds of substances that threaten human health, including carcinogens, particulate mater and volatile organic compounds

The majority of benefits from recycling come from replacing the virgin materials used in the manufacturing process, and the benefits of composting come from better treatment of our soils, carbon sequestration and avoided pesticide and fertilizer use.

It definitely takes a winning team to accomplish this success – thanks to all of you.
